Discount at stores for customers using reusable bags? (1 comment)

I was thinking this morning as I was at the store, wouldn't it be great if we could get some big grocery chains on board with giving a small discount to people who bring their own bags? I wonder actually if any of the existing, forward thinking chains are doing this? Anybody know of any?

Imagine if you got even 0.5% of a discount for bringing your own bags. Unfortunately I think we need those kind of economic incentives for
people to really change their lifestyles. But it's amazing the power of economics, and maybe by doing something like that this could make a noticable difference. I wonder how we would go about getting something like this happening, any ideas anybody?

Want some inspiration? Watch this video. it's not directly about plastic bags, but man it's inspiring (and scary)

Wow. That video is powerful. Talk about awareness!! Thanks for sharing Cam. That really impacted me.

It would be awesome if stores offered some type of incentive for reusable bags. There are many people who don't see how their one small action can effect the bigger picture. Here's a way Ireland took control of their problem (taken from ReusableBags.com website):

In 2001, Ireland consumed 1.2 billion plastic bags, or 316 per person. An extremely successful plastic bag consumption tax, or PlasTax, introduced in 2002 reduced consumption by 90%. Approximately 18,000,000 liters of oil have been saved due to this reduced production. Governments around the world are considering implementing similar measures.

Also - just going to Ikea here in California and having to pay a quarter for a tiny plastic bag, really makes you want to use your own.
